The Faculty of Sharia & Islamic Studies at Somali National University (SNU) is one of the University’s oldest and most distinguished academic faculties. Established in 1978, it was founded to provide higher education in Islamic Sharia, Islamic Studies, and the Arabic language, making it the first faculty in Somalia dedicated to advanced teaching and research in these disciplines.

The Faculty was established to meet the growing need for qualified Islamic scholars, judges, educators, and legal professionals equipped with sound knowledge of the Holy Qur’an, the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), and the Arabic language. It is committed to preparing graduates who possess strong academic knowledge, professional competence, and ethical values to serve their communities with wisdom, moderation, and integrity.

Throughout its history, the Faculty has produced generations of distinguished scholars, educators, judges, imams, and community leaders who have made significant contributions to religious education, legal scholarship, public service, and the promotion of peace, justice, and social harmony in Somalia and beyond.

Today, the Faculty continues to combine traditional Islamic scholarship with contemporary academic approaches, encouraging research, critical thinking, and dialogue while addressing the religious, legal, and social challenges facing modern Muslim societies. Through quality teaching, research, and community engagement, the Faculty remains committed to preserving Islamic knowledge, promoting the Arabic language, and contributing to national development.
